ABMI Newsletter for 2010 Darv and Carol Smith

Dear Friends, Colleagues, and Family:

Greetings from our home and YWAM base in Boulder, CO. We taught or ministered in 17 countries on 5 continents during 2010. This included teaching in 7 Foundations for Counseling Ministries (FCM) schools in 6 countries: Rivera, Uruguay; Pichilemu, Chile; Jinja, Uganda; Worcester, South Africa; Perth, Australia (Darv only); Kona, HI, USA; Salem, Oregon, USA; & Almaty, Kazakhstan. Carol primarily taught on Bonding, Attachment, & Maturation Stages and Darv taught on Basic Understanding of Addiction. We taught in ABC outreaches in Swaziland and Mozambique. Darv taught in ABCS schools in Kona, HI, USA & Kiev, Ukraine.

A highlight was attending the first Asian International Substance Abuse and Addiction Coalition (ISAAC) Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in March. Pax Tan and his team focused on healing traumatic pain.
Another highlight this year for Darv was being asked by the International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM) to share a research paper, “International Training of Addiction Counselors in ABC Schools”. These schools, from 1989 to 2000, were held in 9 countries with 500 students from 53 countries. The ISAM conference was in Milan, Italy.

Darv was invited by Tom Bremer, Teen Challenge Europe Director, to share a summary of ABC addiction training with TC leaders from about 50 European addiction rehab programs. This conference was held in Dublin, Ireland. TC is desiring to improve their programs with the use of some newer approaches.

The final and major highlight was celebrating our 50th Wedding Anniversary in Boulder with our 4 children and 14 grandchildren and many family members and friends in our home. Carol organized an excellent two-piano concert for the celebration. (pic)

Darv has continued to do locum tenens emergency medicine work in small hospitals to help provide support for our ABMI students, staff or guest teachers. We desire to find partners to help support our ministry. We are partially supported by First Presbyterian Church, Boulder, CO.
Blessings, Darv & Carol
