The Tree of Addictions originated with Linda Subris in her presentation during the ABC school in 1989. It was developed further by Darv with new information added as more understanding came about.

It is meant to be taught beginning from the top down. The branches or limbs represent the common addictions; the roots are the emotional and hereditary factors under the limbs. After some research articles were published, trauma was found to be under all addictions. I decided to call this the Soil of Addictions as it underlies all categories of addictions. Trauma is now the more common term used in place of abuse. I have separated trauma into four major categories: Physical, Emotional, Spiritual, and Sexual Trauma. This Tree of Addictions is taught in all Addictive Behavior Counseling Schools and is often taught in the practicum phase of ABC schools.
